Don’t tell anyone about this

The Trademark Blog has an interesting post that explains how the law views requests for confidentiality (as in, one party in communication requiring the other party to keep the contents confidential). I didn’t realize that there’s no legal obligation to keep anything confidential if there’s no contract, even if confidentiality is requested.

Why I won’t be a Google investor

I was thinking of explaining why any thought of investing in the Google IPO is irrational, but the Motley Fool beat me to it.

Marshmallows at light speed

One of the (many) great things about Making Light is that a single post can cover both the pronunciation of the word "Celtics" (is it a hard or soft C?) and a way to measure the speed of light using marshmallows and a microwave.

Another Rosetta Stone

According to Phluzein, German and Egyptian archeologists have uncovered a stone with the same inscription repeated in Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphs, just like the Rosetta Stone. Bloomberg also has the story. I don’t know why this isn’t all over the news, but if it’s true it’s an incredible find.

Now that’s fast

One personal highlight of today’s Phillies game was the chance to see Billy Wagner close. Wow. What a difference from Mitch Williams and Jose Mesa. With Wagner, you can blink and miss the ninth inning because it’s just 1-2-3-and-done.

I didn’t take as many pictures as I should have while I was at the game, but here’s a notable one from Wagner’s ninth:

Can’t find that Mongolian-Philadelphia connection

I’m in Philadelphia for a couple of days to see my family and to go to a Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park. More on that later, hopefully. Tonight, I had dinner with a friend from high school whom I hadn’t seen in nearly eight years. Kim and I were talking about all kinds of things, and at one point I mentioned Mongolian barbecue. She’d never heard of it. I wandered off to Google just now, and I can’t find a single Mongolian barbecue place in the Philadelphia area. Hopefully I’m just lacking in the Google Search Skillz department, since it’d truly be sad if there wasn’t a single Mongolian barbecue place in this part of the world.

ADHOC registration troubles

Maybe the trick with MacHackADHOC is that you have to hack your way in. The registration forms have no way to sign up for anything other than a student rate (or, if you’re a speaker, no rate at all). That’s a bit disturbing given that their initial registration period expires on Friday. Hmph.

It’s weird how I’m sort of torn about going this year. Every time I think about it, I think, “Wow, that’s a dumb name.” Then I point out to myself that the name of a conference has nothing to do with how enjoyable the conference is, and if it’s like past MacHacks I’ll have a lot of fun. So I’m almost certainly going, but I’ll still insist that the name is a bad choice. And that it’s really tough to attend a conference that you can’t register for. (Or to speak at one for which the speaker coordinator doesn’t reply to email, but that’s another story.)

Update: Alexei has some comments, too. Hopefully the folks in charge will be able to clean everything up soon and make it possible for both of us to attend.
